Replenishment of Fire Island Beaches Paused for Endangered Birds

Fire Island beaches are among the most beautiful in the world – but they’re also home to a number of gorgeous birds. The piping plover makes its nest along the coastlines of Fire Island, and plans to fix the dunes have come to a halt because of them. That’s because the pretty, sparrow-sized piping plover is listed as an endangered species in New York, and the National Audubon Society fears that they won’t be able to climb the 13-15 ft. high dunes that the Army Corps of Engineers plans to build along our coastline.
The dune replenishment project is designed to protect our Fire Island homes from another Superstorm Sandy, and a judge has allowed work to continue on parts of the coast where the piping plovers don’t nest.
