Fire Island Ferries Orders 10th Ferry from Shipbuilder Blount Boats

Posted on March 1, 2018 by admin in Fire Island News

There will soon be a new ferry that operates between Bay Shore and Fire Island. Fire Island Ferries has ordered its tenth ferry from shipbuilder Blount Bouts, based out of Warren, Rhode Island. The first ship Blount built for Fire Island Ferries was the Capt. Patterson in 1972.

Behind Capt. Patterson, Blount Boats built Fire Island Miss in 1976, Traveler in 1977, Vagabond in 1979, Fireball in 1981, Firebird in 1983, Fire Island Flyer in 2001, Fire Island Belle in 2009 and Fire Islander in 2013. The new ship will be a sister ship to the Fire Islander.

The newest boat to join the Fire Island Ferries fleet will be an 85-foot aluminum ferry, powered by John Deere diesel engines. The ship will produce 650 hp at 2,100 rpm each, the mains will spin props through ZF 550 marine gears with 2:1 reduction ratios and will be US Coast Guard certified, Subchapter K Rules and Regulations.

The newest Fire Island ferry is scheduled for delivery in May 2019. Fire Island Ferries services the seven western towns of Fire Island; Ocean Beach, Fair Harbor, Kismet, Saltaire, Dunewood/Atlantique, Ocean Bay Park and Seaview. The 30-minute ride transports you to 32 miles of pristine sand dune beaches, relaxation, wildlife and maritime forests.
