Pines Modern House Tour 2017 Offers Interactive Tour of Fire Island Pines Real Estate

Posted on October 6, 2017 by William J. Newman in Fire Island News

Mid-century modern architecture is prevalent amongst Fire Island Pines real estate, and the annual Pines Modern House Tour offers a unique perspective into homes made famous by icons like Truman Capote and Calvin Klein. Pines Modern was founded by Christopher Rawlins, whose goal is to preserve the architectural heritage of these homes. Among the Modernist properties featured on the tour, five of the homes are for sale.

In the 1970s, architects like Horace Gifford and Andrew Gellar left their mark on Fire Island Pines by designing homes outside of the norm. Many of these homes are still standing today, although their owners have passed. Some face the threat of being redone by developers.

“Gone were the painted surfaces, clipped lawns, and all the brute force associated with maintaining the typical suburban home,” Rawlins explained of the architecture introduced by Gifford and Gellar. “Naturally-weathering cedar and cypress pavilions in a riot of shapes established our signature architecture. Yet for all their sculptural purity, these homes offered a relaxed and sensual ambiance that resonated with weekenders attired in nothing more than a bikini and Bain de Soleil.”

Among the Modernist homes for sale are Giffford’s Sail Walk home built in 1975, on the market for $1.75 million, as well as another Gifford home on Bay Walk on the market for $1.895 million. The highest priced listing is the Ocean Walk property, which is listed for $2.75 million.

Pines Modern House Tours 2017 took place on September 9, 10 and 15, which were curated and guided by Rawlins, but curious real estate enthusiasts can take a virtual tour on the Pines Modern website.
