3 Coast Guard Crew Members Hospitalized after Barge Malfunction at Fire Island Inlet

Posted on March 1, 2019 by admin in Fire Island News

Three Coast Guard crew members were evacuated and hospitalized after suffering injuries from a pump system malfunction at a barge in the Fire Island Inlet in late February.

U.S. Coast Guard officials say Station Fire Island watch standers received a call about two men sustaining injuries from the malfunction around 5pm on Feb. 11. A 45-foot response boat then arrived to the scene around 5:30pm.

One crew member aboard the Barge Reggie had a possible head injury and the other had a possible broken arm. They were taken to nearby Good Samaritan Hospital in Islip after first being taken to Station Fire Island by a rescue crew. They were transported to the hospital via emergency medical services.

Another crew member, who suffered cuts from the pump system malfunction, received treatment at Good Samaritan hospital as well. He was taken to the hospital separately via a Barge Reggie safety officer.

The status of the three Coast Guard crew members’ conditions is currently unknown and their names have not been released.
