4 Fire Island Homes Destroyed in Massive Fire

Posted on August 3, 2017 by William J. Newman in Fire Island News

After a fire broke out in one home in Fire Island Pines, four homes were destroyed and two others were damaged. Before 1am on June 16, the fire started at a house on Ocean Walk, which was vacant at the time. It took 16 fire departments and 120 firefighters to control the flames, which were exasperated by a propane tank explosion and strong gusts of wind.

Joseph Geiman, first assistant chief of the Fire Island Pines Fire Department, said of the strong winds the following day, “We had a northwest wind, it was moving at about 30 miles per hour last night, so it quickly blew the smoke and flames into the west side house and to the north.”

No injuries were reported, but three firefighters were injured while battling the fire, which subsided just before 5am. Two were treated at the scene and one was taken to Bay Shore’s South Side Hospital with high blood pressure.

The residents of the home the fire started in were out for the night, but residents of homes to the left and right were home and called the fire department when the fire first broke out. They initially started to attempt to put the fire out themselves with garden hoses to no avail. Geiman said up to 20 homes could have been destroyed in the fire, but it was contained thanks to the hardworking crew of firefighters.
