Fire Island Businesses Staying Open Past Labor Day This Year

This unconventional year has forced business owners in Fire Island to make an unconventional decision about keeping their doors open past the usual season. Many Fire Island restaurants and other businesses have made the decision to stay open past Labor Day this year, attempting to offer visitors somewhere to go to escape New York City this fall.

Fire Island business owner Jacquelyn Piazza, who owns Cherry’s On The Bay in Cherry Grove admitted to Newsday. “Initially, we struggled with the idea of staying open after Labor Day.” However, she and other business owners saw the need to stay open.

Chris Mercogliano, who owns both the Palms Hotel and CJ’s in Ocean Beach, also said, “We have been advocating all [Ocean Beach] businesses to stay open as long as possible … We feel with many people fleeing the city, Ocean Beach will be a viable destination through the fall.”

Another fall activity will be available for visitors this year at Fire Island Tap in Kismet, the “First Annual Kismet Pumpkin Pick,” where visitors can pick their own pumpkins. Owner Jake Perdie hopes it will be an annual event going forward.

The event will take place over two days; from Oct. 3-4 starting at 9am. A carving contest will even take place on Oct. 10 for those who purchased pumpkins, the prize being $100 gift cards to either FI Tap or Beach & Vine.
