Fire Island Dune Building to Start Next Year After Multiple Delays

Posted on September 2, 2017 by William J. Newman in Fire Island News

While attending a Fire Island Association annual meeting in Ocean Beach, Fire Island National Seashore Superintendent Chris Soller estimated the Fire Island dune project could begin in early 2018 after multiple delays. The project, which was introduced in 2013, is currently two years behind schedule after it was originally estimated it would be completed by 2016.

The National Park Service and New York State had to approve the $207 million plan, designed and paid for by the Army Corps of Engineers, because the Fire Island National Seashore covers the whole island. If the dune-building project starts early next year, it will likely carry on through next summer. “It’s not going to break for the summer; that’s the goal,” Soller said at the meeting.

The dune project involves 13 beachfront homes in Davis Park having to be realigned or pushed back. In Ocean Bay Park, oceanfront homeowners received offers for buyouts to clear the way for new dunes. In the Pines, around 12 pools and/or decks will have to be moved. The project will restore 12.5 miles of protective dunes that were destroyed by Hurricane Sandy back in 2012. Fire Island residents had to sign contracts to allow for the federal dune project to commence on their land, which will control flooding in future storms.
