Fire Island Lighthouse Vandalized Days After Re-Opening Following COVID-19 Lockdown

Just days after re-opening following the COVID-19 lockdown, the Fire Island Lighthouse was vandalized with graffiti. Fire Island National Seashore Superintendent Alex Romero said this act is one of several that took place on National Park Service property, although authorities are not sure if the acts are connected.

The incident happened on Monday, July, 27, 2020, which Romero shared was actually the second graffiti incident that day.

“There have been six acts of vandalism to Park property over a period of 10 days,” Romero said. “Our public bathrooms have been defaced, two stop signs were tagged, and one of our vessels, even a part of the ‘find your park’ frame was sawed off. This is actually the second tagging incident to the lighthouse, another one had showed up earlier in the day.”

It’s unclear what was written on the national landmark with graffiti, but Romero said they would be revisiting how they protect it going forward and cautioned Fire Island residents and visitors about staying safe.

“We are working with Suffolk County to catch the perpetrator or perpetrators as well as revisiting how we do things,” he said. “If you see something report it to FINS or call 911, but don’t put yourself in an unsafe situation. People care about this landmark and don’t want to see it destroyed.”
