Fire Island to Montauk Point Project Gets 2022 Start Date

The $1.5 billion Fire Island to Montauk Point Project is now expected to start in 2022, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

The Fire Island to Montauk Project, or FIMP, was approved along with Southold’s Hashamomuck Cove Coastal Storm Risk Management project as part of a $1.4 trillion federal spending bill following Superstorm Sandy in 2012.

The extensive project, which aims to protect 83 miles of Long Island’s South Shore from sea level rising and storms, will involve projects like dredging and coastal restoration. The first contract is for dredging Fire Island Inlet and relocating the sand to near Gilgo Beach in Babylon Town, according to Newsday.

Last month U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin said of the project, “Continuing to safeguard and invest in our maritime infrastructure will help preserve Long Island’s way of life for generations to come.”

Part of FIMP includes a feeder beach in Montauk along 6,000 feet of shorefront that will be replenished every four years for the next 30 years.
