Fire Island’s Watch Hill Marina Opening Delayed

Posted on September 2, 2017 by William J. Newman in Fire Island News

The reopening of Fire Island’s Watch Hill marina has been delayed until early 2018, the National Park Service has confirmed. The project’s budget started at $5.4 million and will now cost an additional $1.5 million.

Watch Hill Marina has 182 boat slips. It was damaged by superstorm Sandy in 2012 and work began towards its reopening in September 2016.

Fire Island National Seashore facility manager Jim Dunphy explained in a statement, “With more time, unforeseen and necessary repairs to the substructure can be made so boaters and visitors can safely enjoy Watch Hill in the future,” adding, “The Watch Hill marina project was engineered to ensure the marina is safe and can withstand storms for years to come.”

Woodstock Construction LTD is heading the project, which will replace lighting and electrical systems, the bulkhead and boardwalk. Dunphy said the project includes “supplementing girders and backfilling some areas of the bulkhead.” An elevated electrical building has already been built, along with conduit and conductors being replaced.

The multimillion dollar project was scheduled to be finished by the end of this summer, and the visitors center, bathrooms, lifeguarded beach and tent campground have been closed since work began. During construction, the marina is also closed to boaters and ferry boats.
