Ed Mooney, former owner of Fire Island Ferry, has died at the age of 91.

Mooney owned Fire Island Ferry for 35 years before he handed the business down to his three children; Michael, Timothy and Casey. Mooney died on December 26, 2020.

A tribute was posted on Fire Island Ferries’ Facebook account that read in part, “Family, friends, and his faithful, Fire Island Belle, took Captain Edwin J. Mooney Jr. around the bay for a final tour. Stories were shared, his life celebrated, and good byes said.”

A veteran of the U.S. Army, Mooney started working at Fire Island Ferries in 1948 and purchased it in 1972. He wrote a book about it called Ferries to Fire Island.

Mooney’s funeral took place on December 30, 2020, at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Bay Shore.
