Governor Cuomo Announces Deal to Clean Up Long Island Aquifer, with Barriers to be Installed Near Great South Bay

Governor Cuomo has announced a deal to clean up a Long Island aquifer after a decade of negotiations to get the deal completed. The project will include installing new containment extraction wells along a toxic plume to remove groundwater pollutants spreading in among local communities.

On Monday, December 21, Cuomo announced the $104.4 million deal with the U.S. Navy and Northrop Grumman. The deal includes the Navy taking care of clean-up for the west side of the toxic plume, while Grumman takes care of the east side. There will also be barriers installed on the south side of the plume, which leads out to the Great South Bay.

“My DEC and our whole team here knew that there was a pollution plume left by Grumman with toxic chemicals in the aquifer,” Cuomo said in the announcement. “It was left during the manufacturing era by Grumman and the plume has been growing and moving to more and more communities.”

He also called it the “largest settlement in state history.”

These actions will mitigate the toxic plumes, which will provide clean drinking water to Long Islanders.
