Governor Cuomo to Deploy 32 Rail Cars to the Fire Island and Twelve Mile Reefs to Help Artificial Reef Expansion

Governor Cuomo has announced plans to deploy 32 rail cars to the Fire Island and Twelve Mile Reefs to support artificial reef expansion efforts – 16 to each reef. These efforts help both the tourism and recreation industries of Long Island and assist in improving marine life.

Wells Fargo Rail Corporation has also donated 75 rail cars in total to help reef expansion efforts, with 64 rail cars deployed to reefs so far.

“New York’s historic commitment to growing our network of artificial reefs has become a national model for environmental conservation and economic growth,” Governor Cuomo said.

“With the deployment of these 32 donated rail cars to both the Fire Island and Twelve Mile Reefs, we are not only strengthening the state’s vital marine ecosystems, but boosting local economies throughout Long Island with additional recreational and tourism-based opportunities as well.”

Materials like rock, concrete, and steel are what make up the artificial reefs, which are strategically placed after cleaned off by the DEC overseas to ensure no harm to existing sea life. The artificial reefs eventually create new habitats as fish move in and organisms like barnacles, sponges, anemones, corals, and mussels attach themselves to the sea floor.

Cuomo’s support of the Artificial Reef Program complements investments in the Environmental Protection Fund and Clean Water Infrastructure Act, a ban on offshore drilling, the continuation of the Long Island Shellfish Restoration initiative and other efforts being made to improve marine life in New York.
