National Park Service and Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society Renew 5-Year Partnership

The National Park Service and the Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society have signed an agreement to renew a 5-year partnership to continue the fire island lighthouse’s preservation efforts, along with public programming. The Lighthouse Preservation Society, which is a non-profit, was created back in 1982. The two organizations have worked together for over 35 years to keep one of Fire Island’s most celebrated landmarks alive.

Fire Island National Seashore Superintendent Chris Soller said in a statement about the renewal of their partnership, “For more than 30 years, the Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society has helped to ensure the Fire Island Lighthouse remains a premier tourist destination,” adding, “The Fire Island Lighthouse is a special place to experience Fire Island and explore maritime history.”

The Fire Island lighthouse has been part of the National Register of Historic Places since 1984. The first Fire Island lighthouse was built in 1826, only to be rebuilt in 1857, and the United States Coast Guard built their tract near the lighthouse in 1915. When the Lighthouse Preservation Society was formed 35 years ago, they raised $1.3 million to restore and preserve it, an effort they are continuing today.

The lighthouse was then restored to its 1939 condition in 1982 and became relit and restored as an official aid to navigation, considering the light on the Robert Moses Tower previously only shone seaward and did not help aid boaters on the Great South Bay.
