The Fire Island Ferries Receives Public Service Award from the U.S. Coast Guard

The Fire Island Ferries was recognized after crew members saved six passengers from a sinking boat back in July. Their heroic efforts were celebrated when they received the Public Service Award from the U.S. Coast Guard at the end of August.

It was the actions of Fire Island Ferries Capt. Luke Kaufman and crew members Anthony Celano and Kayla Brabender that resulted in the recognition. On July 26, the crew was headed across the Great South Bay from Bay Shore on the 5:50 trip aboard the Fireball when they were alerted by six passengers of a sinking vessel trying to get their attention.
It only took 15 minutes for the crew to save the passengers, who were thrust into the water when their boat capsized. Brabender had just completed training two days before the rescue.

“I didn’t even have to ask my crew, it was outstanding, they were already on top of it going to grab the boarding ladder,” Kaufman said.
Capt. Eva Van Camp, commanding officer of the Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound, praised their efforts, saying, “The entire crew communicated flawlessly, worked in unison, to make this amazing rescue and pull these people out of danger.”

Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter also gave praise to the crew at the award ceremony, thanking them for keeping families safe on Fire Island Ferries each summer.
