Cherry Grove Fire Department Showcases New Fire Engine Named After Chief Lyn Hutton
Fire Island’s very own Cherry Grove Fire Department has revealed its new fire engine, which holds a special importance because it’s dedicated in honor of Cherry Grove’s longtime ex Fire Chief Lyn Hutton.
The fire department held a ceremony for the unveiling of the new fire truck named after Hutton on Saturday, September 25. The truck is unique in that it was designed specifically to navigate the narrow boardwalks of Cherry Grove, where there are no paved roads.
Former CGFD chief Hutton was chief from 1980 to 1994. She is believed to be the first female fire chief in New York State, and she was the first of three women fire chiefs in Cherry Grove Fire Department history.
Diane Romano, Chair, Cherry Grove Board of Fire Commissioners, said “As one of the first women leaders in the fire service in New York State, Lyn was a pioneer, a role model, and a mentor for many in the Cherry Grove Fire Department,” adding she was “both tough and kind, devoted to training her firefighters, professional and demanding, and respected by the department and other departments on Fire Island.”
