Kayaking on Fire Island
Though Fire Island is mostly noted for its fishing and boating, there lays a beautiful blank canvas full of possibilities for the avid paddler. Water enthusiasts often underestimate the value of exchanging a jet ski for a paddle and kayak. There are many reasons why Fire Island kayaking is perfect for any kayaker, regardless of experience level.
There are two sides available for paddling on Fire Island, where kayakers can begin their exploration. The Fire Island National Seashore side makes for a more relaxed paddle experience, where kayakers can come on to the shoreline and take in protected wilderness dunes for a little mainland exploration. If kayakers really want to take in all nature has to offer, camping is allowed on this side of the island. This makes for an enjoyable day spent paddling and an easy back to shore drop point.
For the kayaker who is looking for a little more of an invigorating paddle, there is always the ocean side. Captree or Robert Moses State Parks make for perfect drop points. The stimulating breakers of the Oceanside make for some fast paced and exciting paddling. With Jones Beach shoreline near enough for a short rest, the water will be inviting you to enjoy a brisk paddle once again, as you make your way back to the enchanting shores of Fire Island!
The beauty of kayaking on Fire Island is that you have the best of both worlds. As a paddler, you crave the ability to be up close to nature and simultaneously, the rush of a challenging paddle. Fire Island is the perfect marriage of both. Spend part of the day on the Fire Island shoreline side and the other on the ocean side, for the optimum kayaking experience. Spend just the weekends or a whole summer in a Fire Island rental home and enjoy all the waves have to offer!
