Reenactment of the Flying Santa to be Held at Fire Island Lighthouse on Dec. 10
Visit the Fire Island Lighthouse on Saturday, December 10 to relive Santa Claus’ tradition of flying above the historical Fire Island Lighthouse in a small plane to visit the lighthouse’s keepers and their families. Santa will stop in and provide an opportunity for photos with him to get all the kids (and parents!) in the holiday spirit. This free event starts at 11:30am.
This year’s Reenactment of the Flying Santa is the 14th annual event of its kind. This tradition was started nearly 50 years after Pilot Snow (or Flying Santa) flew his plane past the Fire Island Lighthouse and dropped off holiday gifts for the Lighthouse Keeper at the time, as well as his family.
Prior to Santa’s visit, a Light Keepers Behind the Scenes tour (http://www.fireislandlighthouse.com/events.html?ID=51) will take place at 9am, with reservations required. The tour will cost $15 for Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society (FILPS) Members and $20 for non-members. This tour will be led by one of the current Lighthouse Keepers, who will take the group on a comprehensive tour from the Light Keepers workshop in the basement of the Keeper’s Quarters all the way up to the beacon in the lantern room of the lighthouse tower.
