Fire Island National Seashore Program Allows Artists to Live for Free on Fire Island this Summer

Posted on March 30, 2018 by admin in Fire Island News

The 2018 Artist-in-Residence program, offered by the Fire Island National Seashore, allows up to four lucky artists to live for free on Fire Island for two weeks this summer while they create art. The program was created back in 2013 and since its inception, seventeen artists have participated.

Artists were encouraged to apply for the program until the Feb. 16 deadline. Residents are chosen based on artistic merit and project proposal, the National Park Service said. Once accepted, the artists are offered focused time to explore the unique destination of Fire Island and create art based on their findings. The winning artists will also conduct presentations, workshops, and showcase their art in an exhibit as part of the National Park Service’s public outreach program.

The NPS said of the Artist-in-Residence program, “The goals of this program are to provide creative and educational opportunities for artists of all disciplines to explore the qualities of the natural environment, culture, and/or history of Fire Island, and to support the mission of the NPS to promote the conservation and preservation of the park.”

The four two-week residency programs are as follows:

May 26 – June 9
June 10 – June 24
September 1 – September 15
September 16 – September 30
