Saltaire Announces Plans to Renovate Village Hall

Posted on March 1, 2018 by admin in Fire Island News

Fire Island’s Saltaire has announced plans to renovate Village Hall, as well as expand the post office to accommodate the online shopping era. Village administrator Mario Posillico has confirmed these plans by Butler Engineering.

The plans include an updated electrical system, handicap accessibility and an elevator installation. The renovation will bring Village Hall, which is the first building visitors see when they get to Fire Island via ferry, up to code.

“The building now and our offices now are very quaint, but they’re outdated and definitely need a face-lift,” Posillico told Newsday.

The post office will be located within a newly-constructed public safety building, designed by Fire Island village resident and architect Nicholas Petschek. Fire Island mayor John Zacarro Jr. said a demand for a larger post office is there because of the “wave of Amazon and packages that have taken over our buildings.”

Zaccaro also said these new plans for Village Hall and the public safety building coincide with a larger effort to rebuild Fire Island after Superstorm Sandy’s devastation in 2012.

Village Hall has been standing since 1938. The new plans were posted on the village of Saltaire’s website in January.
